I was really curious about exploring the total amount of wounded and casualty people during the war. I think a lot of people tend to focus just on the US or whatever country they are from when it comes to these kinds of questions and don't think about everyone else involved, so that's why I was curious. After doing some research, the numbers turned out to be pretty unreal. So, the US suffered about 58,220 deaths and that's whats on record. I like to think that in most statistics, there are always a little bit more than they say and that goes for most topics, but we'll just round down to 58,00 US troops dead from the war. 304,000 US troops were wounded. That means out of the 2.7 million US troops that served, 13% came back dead or not the same. Let's look at the Vietnamese. The US estimated somewhere between 200,000-250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers to have been killed during Vietnam.
Aside from soldiers, 2 million Vietnamese civilians were killed during the war which is a 3rd as many people died in the Holocaust, 5.3 million Vietnamese civilians were injured, and 11 million were held as refugees in their own country. South Korea suffered 4,000 dead, Thailand about 350 dead, Australia suffered a little over 500 dead, and New Zealand about 36 dead. These countries did fight for South Vietnam on a smaller scale.I found my information on Britannica.com and BBC.com.

I debated this topic for research, I’m glad to see you did it though! I can’t believe how much of a difference there is between US casualties and other casualties of the war. I think you might enjoy my post as I covered the some of the 304,000 that came back not the same!
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned that 2 million Vietnamese civilians were killed during the war, and that it was a 3rd of the casualties in the Holocaust. Do you think that the motives behind the war have some standing, or do you think it was just as senseless as the Holocaust in terms of of the taking of human lives?
ReplyDeleteThese numbers are crazy, and good details to this topic. I also think that the casualties were tremendous but no one really speaks up about it.
ReplyDeletewow, I didn't realize how many people from other countries fought in the Vietnam war.
