Vietnam Research Exercise: The Fall of Saigon by Bailey Price

The fall of Saigon, that happened on April 30, 1975, indicated the end of the Vietnam War. Basically what happened is that the South Vietnam capital, Saigon, was captured by North Vietnamese forces. The reason this happened was because Richard Nixon withdrew US troops from Vietnam when undergoing the process of Vietnamization, a tactic to withdrawal US forces in an "honorable" manner. The North Vietnam troops had already made it within seventy-five miles of Saigon, but no major offensives had been made on Saigon. When the US troops were pulled from Saigon, it quickly fell to North Vietnam. The South Vietnamese army soon faded away.

Here are some people being evacuated from the US
embassy.

When staff from the US embassy tried to flee it proved difficult as the embassy was not built for helicopters to land there. There was also the risk that the large helicopters used to get the masses of Americans out of the embassy would draw attention and get the embassy bombed. As the Vietnamese forces got closer, the only option was to evacuate using helicopters. The embassy staff cut down trees and removed other things to make it possible to land helicopters in the courtyard. Many US citizens were evacuated.

A united Vietnam was created and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.

  1. Were there any citizens that they were not able to evacuate?

  2. When this event was taking place, what do you think was going through the Americans heads? I believe if I was a Vietnamese/American supporter, I would have been especially terrified. Many of these people didn't make it out, and were captured by the North. What do you think became of most of them?
