Throughout history, many things have said to be unrealistic or they are shocked when other things happen, someone tells others of an event and open with “the impossible has happened. Shortly after the events of September 11, Joe Nichols wrote the song “The Impossible”. Joe was a new singer in 1996 and independently published his own first album, then in 2002 in the album “Man with a memory” which included “The Impossible” made his famous, the song jumped to the 3 most played song in the U.S a few months later. Joe was 19 when the Album was released and went platinum, he was trying to pull the country together during the rebuilding phase after the impossible of 9/11.
“The Impossible” is a song about things in Joe’s Life that he thought was impossible but actually happened and compared them to past tragedies. He told the story of his friends accident, he said they had a crash and he walked away without a scratch but his friend was flown away in the helicopter and “They said he'd never walk again. But Billy said he would an' his mom and daddy prayed, An' the day we graduated, he stood up to say: Unsinkable ships sink. Unbreakable walls break. Sometimes the things you think would never happen, happen just like that. Unbendable steel bends. If the fury of the wind is unstoppable, I've learned to never underestimate, The impossible”.
This reveals a lot about Joe and his style, it was meant to have a deep meaning that you can relate to. The impossible events are vague but each thing relates to a famous event and they are, Unbendable Steel: the twin towers were said to be so sturdy that the steel would never bend but the towers fell on September 11, Unbreakable walls: the Berlin wall was never expected to be torn down, and last but not least, Unsinkable Ships: referring to the titanic being an unsinkable ship and the greatest the world has ever known until it crashed into the iceberg.
Joe is huge in the country music world but many other who didn’t like country listened to his music for the messages hidden within and he was sometimes compared to past country stars such as Kenny Rogers and George Jones due to Joe having songs and a voice that reminded people of “True Country”. Kenny Rogers is one of the most famous country singers in history (he was inducted into the country hall of fame) and his music had the deeper meaning that country is all about.

Personally, I don't quite listen to country, but after reading this, I definitely want to check this musician out! If you could give me your 3-5 favorite songs by him, I'd be more than glad to listen!
ReplyDeleteMy 3 favorite would be: The Impossible, brokenheartsville, and gimme that girl. The first 2 are from his second album (it went platinum recently) and the 3rd is a more recent song that is still played on the radio today!
DeleteIts interesting how many good songs are created when an emotional event happens. I feel like song writers always have a clear memory when they write a song about something that is emotional and impactful to them rather than things that are bland to them.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Joe Nichols is able to convey many powerful messages about tragedies allows a large group of people to feel truly in tuned with his writing. This allows Jo to gather large groups of people to follow him.
