The artist that has the most impact on me would be Higher Brothers from 88rising. Since I was young, I don’t really have an idol singer or artist that I admire too. I love most people’s music but just a few of them. If anyone looks into my playlists, I have a bit of every type of music (even country) and every singers and artist. However, in recent years I start to listen to more Hip-Hop music, and most of them are English. Their lyrics could be difficult to understand without knowing the culture. But one time I accidentally heard that Higher Brothers, a Chinese group of rappers, that made a song called “Made In China” and with Dexter together. First time I listen to this song, I did not understand what they are saying because I thought it was in English. Soon enough I start to recognize that this is a dialect from Chengdu, Szechuan area. Then, I start to realize that there are also a lot of amazing rappers in China and in Chinese as well. Then I start to dig their songs, and most of them are amazing considering under a place where the government that regulates everything. It gives you a complete different vibe when you listen rap songs with the language you know.
I love a lot of their songs, many of them are showing the idea of doing what you love, and I believe this is something that almost every rapper has.
Anyway, I had down days and those things hit me really hard and I didn’t even know what the purpose of my future is. I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t know who to tell. The conflict part of this is I don’t want to tell anyone about this. I have their songs in my headphone, and then I got a notification that told me they just published a new song. That song is awesome. At least during those days, they were to me. Just that one song that keeps looping in my head, all day long. They are not just some strangers who rap to me; they are kind of like a guidance that telling me what I should do.
Last Saturday, I went to Detroit for their concert. I met them, and I hugged them. They were so nice but they were on fire on the stage. Still, I wouldn’t say I admire them, but their music definitely helped me.
This is the picture that I took last Saturday. So close to stage!

To you, do you think you felt this feeling because of they lyrics or the tune within the music? My guess is that you got hooked into the beat of this song, and then thought twice of the lyrics, and their meaning behind it after research. I may be wrong, but it is nice also to learn and dig into their songs?
ReplyDeleteThe reason I didn't dig into the lyrics is because it means something special to me. I believe they had their own story or reasons for it but those meanings to me is enough for me to know how much impact of their work made on me
DeleteI didn't know that there were rappers in china. I would have imagined that this genre of music would have gotten banned because many of the topics that are associated with this genre wouldn't paint the nicest picture of their country. I'm glad to hear that the power of music was able to help you out of a tough situation and if you need someone to talk to you can always come find me.
ReplyDeleteMe neither!! Just understanding that the environment under the government, I don't think there would be any. But there are a lot of people rapping underground! Well, to be honest, most Chinese people are into Pop (not judging), so my Chinese playlist was all pop, until I found out them. It's really nice once you can listen to something and you know what they actually mean. Sometimes I need to loop up some culture stuff for fully understand English rap songs' lyrics, well of course, if I really love that song of course.
DeleteIts great to see how other cultures can make a certain genre and mix their own language to make it different and interesting. I hope more genres can be mixed like this to create and enjoy something different yet in the same genre.
ReplyDeleteYou know most of their songs are mix with English and Chinese together. You have to understand both culture (but mainly Chinese) to understand what they are saying. I mean it is really cool that they do this lol.
DeleteI love finding out new artist that aren't so mainstream. I have never heard Chinese rapping but i really enjoyed listening to the links you posted because its so different. And that so awesome you got to meet them. What is one of your favorite lines from a song?
