Exploration Six - Harmeet Bhachu

An artist that has had an influence on me would be Vance Joy. He is a singer and songwriter from Australia. The genre of music he puts out could be classified as alternative, indie pop, or indie rock, overall very soft ‘chill’ music. I had the amazing oportunity of seeing him live in concert and backstage as well, his personality shines bright as well.

The reason I first had interest in him was because of the music and tones he produces. The music is soft, relaxing, and mellow. Something I love listening to because it can be played anytime and everywhere, I guess except the weightlifting gym. Some of his beats are catchy and hold a bit of pop to them as well, like one of his well known songs ‘Riptide’. When I had first listened to this song, the chorus was something I could remember easily with lyrics that were ‘different’ than other songs produced. Compared to the typical pop and rap genre that has a big influence in modern music today, Vance Joy’s music tells sort of a story.

Another reason why I had got into this artist was because of the lyrics he put with each beat. Although most are about finding love, and small references to God, his lyrics seem to sing a story of a small moment within relationships. There are repeated choruses within almost every song, but with the rest of the lyrics, they don’t screame chorus when listened to.

Why I chose this artist over other ones would be because of his personality. When I got to see him on stage, his connection with the audience was something unbelievable. Other artists I’ve seen live don’t connect with their audience like he had. Smiles and eye contact with virtually everyone in the audience was something valuable to me and many others in the crowd. When backstage, he said that he did remember seeing me in the crowd. When I heard that, I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. Someone who has such a gift for music and the ability to share it with us is also soft and caring in personality. Many artists don’t give individuals that much attention when performing live.

His impact on the genre of indie and alternative has shaped my view on my personal music taste as well as that genre all together. He was the first singer who I had listened to to get familiar to that genre. To many people out there, they may listen to his music because of their love for God as well, although that is not me, I understand the importance of this artist to them and their faith.

  5. Harmeet, I enjoyed reading your blog post! I also love Vance Joy’s music. One of my favorite songs to play on my ukulele is Vance Joy’s “Riptide.” His music is very soothing to me, and I like that you can genuinely hear actual instruments in his songs. I would love to go to a concert of his someday!!
